In Barcelona, canceled the World Mobile Congress-2020, which is considered the largest exhibition of the mobile industry. This was reported by the local television channel 24 Horas and confirmed by Bloomberg with reference to the statement of the organizers.

“The global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances make it impossible to hold the event.”

The announcement of the cancellation of MWC-2020 was unexpected for many. GSMA intended to discuss next steps on February 14th.

MWC-2020 was supposed to take place from February 24 to February 27 and accept more than 100 thousand participants from around the world. This is the first case in the entire 33-year history of the exhibition when the organizers canceled its holding.

At MWC-2020, among other things, the presentation of smartphones that support 5G technology was expected. Prior to the decision to cancel the exhibition, several large exhibitors, including Facebook, Amazon, and AT&T, refused to go to Barcelona individually.

According to Bloomberg, the largest companies participating in MWC often spend “tens of millions of dollars” on the exhibition. It is unclear exactly who will answer for all the unexpected expenses — corporations or organizers. Wired, citing sources, GSMA asked the Spanish authorities to declare an emergency in order to take out insurance and avoid major losses.
